UPDATE: “Nashville” has been picked up for another season by CMT here in town. I look forward to seeing what they do with the show!
Kinda bummed that ABC’s “Nashville” was cancelled yesterday, though every year it was renewed was a minor miracle, considering the low ratings. It’s been a really great thing for our town—especially from an employment standpoint—some crew jobs as well as some acting roles have been filled by locals. My talent agent had a wall up of photos of all their people who had been cast in the show. It was an amazing experience to have had my short time on the show as the guy who booked bands at the hip, East Nashville music venue, The 5 Spot. To see all that goes into making a network TV series up close was fascinating and chaotic. But mostly it was fun for friends to see me on TV, especially if they didn’t know I was going to be on. My phone sounded like a pinball machine that Wednesday night.
In spite of the overly-dramatic storylines, way too many characters that would swoop in and swoop out, and a cartoonish take on the music business, there were some great performances. I look forward to seeing what happens with Charles “Chip” Esten, in particular, and Sam Palladio, too. And the two young girls, Lennon and Maisy Stella—they will be fun to watch.
It’s been exciting to live wondering if the phone was going to ring again with another opportunity on the show (it did a couple of times, to no avail). So now it’s time for the next story to be written. I’m ready.
